Please pledge money to help purchase the following Engineering Department needs:
Formlab Form 1: $3,300
Makerbot Replicator 2: $2,800
Our students need access to 21st century manufacturing equipment. 3D printing, or Additive Manufacturing, is starting to change the way we design and build “things.” We need these tools for our students to learn to be competitive in a world economy. This particular machine also uses Stereolithography instead of extruding material, and gives much better detail, enabling students to create finer pieces. We have 1 older Makerbot 3D Printer, but with some prints taking over 3 hours, often only 1 student can print per day. This can be frustrating for planning and for the students.
Vacuum Forming Machine: $1,300
Students can design and create a mold, then vacuum form a polymer for a final product. This is a great exposure to a standard 21st century manufacturing technique. We have tried building our own machine, and heating the polymers in toaster oven, and have had moderate success. But the time it takes to “tweak” this system to get it to work takes away from instructional time, and can be frustrating to students as well.
